A call to revisit legislation establishing the National Road Fund of Liberia was over the weekend made by a prominent member of the 54th National Legislature, stating that re-visiting the legislation that created the entity, to grant it an autonomous status, will position the NRF to be more responsive to its operational activities.
The call was made by Nimba County District #9 Representative, Hon. Johnson Gwaikolo, over the weekend during programs marking the 10th Edition of the Global News Network Annual Awards held at the YMCA in Monrovia.
Hon Gwaikolo who spoke to a team of reporters on the sideline of the GNN Awards Program said the need for improved road networks in Liberia cannot be overemphasized because, according to him, roads help to improve access to economic activities including heath, education and so many activities that foster development of a country.
“With good road network we have easier opportunities for our people”, he said, adding, “and so the entity, NRF, has to be strengthened by restructuring the legislation that created the entity so that there can be more autonomy and that it can have more strength and be more responsive to its own operational activities.
The National Road Fund of Liberia was named GNN Liberia’s Most Innovative Institution of the Year 2022 for its innovation and ardent quest to ensuring that the country’s road network takes on an international face. The entity continues to contribute huge financial support to the Ministry of Public Works towards the improvement of Liberia’s road networks, in support of President George Weah’s vision of improving road connectivity in Liberia.
The Nimba County Representative who was also the proud recipient of GNN Liberia’s prestigious Eminent Statesman of the Year 2022 Award, said good road networks will provide easier opportunity for the Liberian people, and strengthening the capacity of the NRF through granting of autonomy to the entity will ensure efficiency, responsiveness and accountability in the overall operation of the National Road Fund of Liberia.
